The same thing happened at Maze Prison in the 1990s. The IRA prisoners took over effective control of the prison - http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/despatches/45488.stm .
Eventually, the IRA essentially ceased to exist, but that was after nearly a half century of violence.
